Patient Care Technician

Course Code: PCT (All course components begin with PCT)

 

Program Objective:

Graduates will be able to perform entry-level technical and personal care skills for patients in long-term care facilities, home settings, hospitals and other medical facilities appropriate to a student’s individual career goal.  Students will be cross-trained to work as Nursing Assistants, Home Health Aides, Phlebotomists, ECG technicians and in a specific aide role in another chosen allied field.  Graduates will be prepared to pass the Florida Nurse Aide Competency Exam.

600 Clock Hours = 50 Weeks

Full Time Mon/Wed/Fri 9:30am-1:30pm

Full Time Mon/Wed/Fri 5:30pm - 9:30pm

Program Description:

The program consists of six components progressing from Basic Healthcare worker to PCT.  Students may exit with marketable skills after any of the individual components. The Program starts with the 90-hour Basic Healthcare Worker, which teaches skills common to all health careers, followed by the 75-hour Nursing Assistant course which includes patient care techniques such as assisting the patient with hygiene, transfers, exercise, nutrition, communication skills, vital signs, use of equipment and providing psychosocial care. Next is the 75-hour Home Health Aide component that teaches the Nursing Assistant how to properly care for clients in the home environment.  In the 150-hour Patient Care Assistant course, students learn phlebotomy and ECG techniques, followed by the 100-hour Advanced Allied Health course which takes place in a setting geared to a student’s individual career goal. Beginning with the Allied Health Assistant class, students may choose to focus on a particular medical specialty at the aide level.  The school will endeavor to arrange an appropriate clinical experience in the student’s focus area. Graduates of the entire PCT program will exit as an advanced, multi-skilled nursing assistant. Approximately half of the entire program consists of laboratory skills practice and clinical rotations.

Entrance /Admission Requirements:

Students who are admitted without evidence of a high school diploma or GED are required to take the TABE ATB exam. Students without a high school diploma or GED can be accepted under the ability to benefit program. Students must be free of communicable disease as verified within the previous six months by a statement from a physician or nurse practitioner. Students must have completed an enrollment agreement and paid all required tuition and fees before the start date of the course.  Student must have a minimum of 17 years of age.  Less than 18 yrs of age, Parent/Guardian signature required.
