MEDICAL ASSISTING

Program Objective:

The Program is composed of 12 individual components. Students receive both the didactic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to work in the administrative and/or clinical settings This program is designed to teach students the skills necessary for employment in the modern medical facility.  A qualified medical assistant is capable of performing a wide range of duties, with a variety of technical detail; thus helping the physician in many clinical situations.  Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a diploma and will be eligible for the clinical Medical Assistant national certification through the National Health Career Association (NHA).

1060 Clock Hours = 53 Weeks

Full Time Mon-Fri 9:30am-1:30pm

Full Time Mon-Fri 5:30pm - 9:30pm

Program is not offered part time

 

Program Description:

The Program is composed of 9 individual components. Students receive both the didactic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to work in the administrative and/or clinical settings Students who successfully complete the program will be prepared for entry-level employment as Medical Assistants performing many administrative duties, including answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping, as well as clinical duties including taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens or performing basic laboratory tests on the premises, disposing of contaminated supplies, and sterilizing medical instruments, instructing patients about medications and special diets, preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician, authorizing drug refills as directed, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, drawing blood, preparing patients for x rays, performing electrocardiograms, removing sutures, and wound care procedures.

Entrance /Admission Requirements:

Verification from an approved healthcare provider that student is free from communicable disease.  At least 17 years of age OR high school diploma.  Students who are admitted without evidence of a high school diploma or GED are required to take the TABE ATB exam. Students without a high school diploma or GED can be accepted under the ability to benefit program. Students must have a completed enrollment form and application and have paid all tuition and fees. Students less than 18yrs of age, parent or guardian signature required. Students who possess a college degree at the Associate of Applied Science level or higher or who have passed a state, national, or industry licensure exam are exempt from meeting the Basic Skills requirement (Rule 6A-10.040, F.A.C.) and are exempt from the entry-level examination.
