HEMODIALYSIS TECHNICIAN

Program Objective:

To prepare students to pass the CCHT National Certification Exam and to be successfully employed as an entry-level Hemodialysis Technician. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in anatomy and physiology, including fluid and electrolyte balance, emergency procedures, patient monitoring, observation and recording, access methodology and hemodialysis equipment use and maintenance.  Employability skills, personal health, teamwork and workplace skills are emphasized along with communication techniques and psychosocial care of patients.

600 Clock Hours = 30 Weeks

Full Time Mon - Fri 5:30pm - 9:30pm

Program Description:

The 600-Hour Hemodialysis Program consists of 19 modules and is derived from both the Florida Department of Education’s Curriculum Framework and the National Association of Nephrology Technician’s Core Curriculum.  The units begin with an introduction to healthcare in general, including healthcare systems, communication skills needed by healthcare workers, ethics, terminology, and emergency/first aid measures.  Following the basics, more specific modules of anatomy, physiology, renal disease and scientific principles of hemodialysis are studied. A significant portion of the program is devoted to vascular access, use of equipment and machinery, patient monitoring and complications. General employability skills, teamwork and professionalism are emphasized throughout the program.  Laboratory skills are integrated into the didactic knowledge, and two hemodialysis machines are available for student practice. Graduates receive a separate certificate verifying completion of the 3-hour mandatory HIV/Bloodborne Pathogen module.

Entrance /Admission Requirements:

Students who are admitted without evidence of a high school diploma or GED are required to take the TABE ATB exam. Students without a high school diploma or GED can be accepted under the ability to benefit program. This requirement is waived if the student has earned an approved, required industry certification. In order to sit for the CCHT National Certification Exam, students must have a high school diploma or GED or have verified dialysis work experience of 4 years before October of 2008.Students must have completed an enrollment agreement and paid all required tuition and fees before the start date of the course. Student must have a statement from a physician or ARNP signed within the previous 6 months that verifies the student is free of communicable disease. Student must have a minimum of 17 years of age. Students less than 18 yrs of age, Parent/Guardian signature required.
